tympanic membrane: a thin membrane, also called the ear drum, that stretches across the end of the ear canal and vibrates from the subtle atmospheric pressure caused by sound waves. When air pressure is not equal on either side of the eardrum, i.e., if the pressure is not balanced, temporary loss of hearing and discomfort can result.
